Community college sets hearings on fate of newspapers

NEW: Speakers back campus papers at community college

Thursday, October 20, 2005By Bill Schackner, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Speakers at Community College of Allegheny County's North campus urged CCAC leaders at a forum today not to eliminate its student newspaper, calling the Voice a community resource and important learning tool.

"To take this away from our students is really close to an obscenity,' said David Palcho, a faculty member and one of about 50 students and employees at today's session.

His campus has been the most vocal in rallying around its newspaper since CCAC confirmed earlier this fall that it was weighing whether to replace student newspapers on CCAC's four campuses with a single, centrally produced publication.

The Student Papers:

The Boyce Collegian is a student operated laboratory newspaper that provides training in writing, reporting, photography, advertising, graphic design and communication skills. Students may or may not enroll in Boyce's journalism classes to be members of the staff; however, all staff members learn journalistic practices as they work, hands-on, to produce at least nine issues a year. The Collegian primarily provides news and information of interest to Boyce's students and a forum for the expression of opinion.

The CCAC-South Campus FORUM is a student-based newspaper that is published monthly. Articles, photography, and cartoons are submitted from the student body and reviewed by the staff for content. Recent awards have included a nod from the American Scholastic Press Association.
The FORUM reaches a target audience of approximately 4,000 readers in the West Mifflin, South Hills, Mon-Valley and Washington County areas. If you would like to contribute to upcoming issues, please feel free to contact the FORUM offices at (412) 469-6352.

The Voice is the student newspaper, which reports on all events at North Campus. It is published in conjunction with a CCAC journalism class. All students are welcome to contribute.
